bear 2

bear 3

Open a new canvas 400w x 400h colour white.

All parts are in 2D.
We will make the basic shapes first then add the details later.

HEAD

1.Select the path drawing tool, shape circle.

2.Draw a circle 125w x 125h.

3.Go into path edit.
Use the top, bottom and right side nodes to create the shape shown.

4.Add a node on the left side as shown, then use the control handles to create a shape something like illustration 3.

It doesn't look like much now but once we add facial features that will look like the bear's head

bear 4

BODY

5.Draw an ellipse, 152w x 168h then rotate this shape 10 degrees to the right.

6.Delete the top node......yikes he lost half of his body:-)
Poor Ted we had better fix him.

7.Pull the side handles on both sides to get this shape shown.

Arms.
Left Arm

8.Draw an ellipse 52w x90h, then rotate this shape 30 degrees to the left.

9.Path edit and delete the bottom node then pull the control handles down to get this shape.

10.Then just a tiny bit of re shaping using the other nodes to get this, (second illustration in this section)

Right arm

11.Duplicate the left arm shape.

12.Rotate and flip it horizontally, then using the transform tools, resize, stretch it up to a height of around 120 pixels

13.Put in place and he looks awful:-))...see illustration 3.

He will look better soon! and that is his very basic arm parts complete.

Now for his legs.

14.Draw an ellipse 170w x 60h and rotate 20 degrees left.

15.pull the top node over to the left then select the node on the inner leg and use the control handles to form this shape

16.Pull the bottom node upwards and use the control handles to form a wider curve. then add a node as shown to create this shape.

Have you saved this recently:-).
left leg

left leg2

Left leg

17.Draw an ellipse 100w x 70h then rotate 10 degrees right.

18.Go into path edit and add a node where shown.

19.Path edit and edit this piece to look like this, the most important part is to match the curve at the top with the curve of his body.

Ears

20.Draw an ellipse 40w x 38h.

21.Path edit and delete the bottom node, then rotate this piece 20 degrees ro the left.

22.Back into path edit and make the curve next to his head match.

The other ear

23.Easy one, draw an ellipse 46w x 52h.

24.Now we don't want him to lose his head so let's give him a bow tie:-)

25.Draw a rounded rectangle 85w x 38h add two nodes so we can scrunch it up in the middle then rotate this shape 15 degrees to the right.

26.Draw a little rounded rectangle for the middle piece and add ribbons if you want.

28.Your bear now looks something like this.

the bear

Now for the fun, this bear needs some colour, texture and shading

29.Change the colour of all the pieces to your choice of bear colour, I used Hex #772B1A.

30.Use the burn, dodge and blur tools to add depth to the bear .

31.Now select the airbrush tool, size about 10 and use a darker colour to add some random colour to all the bear parts.
I used Hex#885508

Gently blur these colours.

We need this to make the filter produce the fur like effect

32.If you are happy with the bear, select all the parts except the bow tie and merge as single object.

33.Now go to the paint engine filter which you installed at the start of this tutorial.

Here you can either use random settings to get an effect you like or use my settings as shown at the bottom of this page.
You may want to apply the filter then add more random colour and apply it again.

34.Finally we will add the finishing touches.

35.Nose..select the rounded edges 3 shape and draw a shape, colour black, resize this to 20w x 13h, then rotate 10 degrees left and place in position as shown on the finished bear.

36.Eyes..Draw an ellipse, colour black, size 14w x 17h.
Duplicate and place in postion, rotate a little if you need to.

37.Highlight the nose and eyes using the airbrush with a light grey colour.

38.Mouth..Use the line and arrow tool, spline, width 1, colour black and draw the lines on his face.

39.Pads for his paws..draw an ellipse in a paler brown, duplicate 3 times and put in place as shown, rotating the shape when you need to.

40.Use the airbrush to add some darker colour to the pads then apply the paint engine filter to the pads.
The settings you used will still be there unless you have closed PI.

Right click and select then merge all objects except the bow tie.

41.For the bow tie fill with a colour or texture that you like.

Here he is down in the woods with his wee tartan rug, having a picnic.
