Welcome to Kilmartin Glen.

cairn

These are 4 photograps taken at Dunchraigaig in Kilmartin Glen.

Dunchraigaig is believed to be the site of the earliest of the inhabitants of Kilmartin Glen dating back to 4000 years BC.

This is one of the "round cairns" in this area.
This Cairn although originally Neolithic was used for burials up into the Bronze Age, it dates to around 2000 BC.

On excavation this one was found to contain three Cists, the picture above and below show the entrance to the main Cist.
The other two pictures are of another Cist sitting just a little way from the Cairn itself.

The third Cist is not visible.

cairn

The excavation was carried out in 1864.

Inside this main Cist the remains of 8 to 10 people were found, these bodies were both burnt and unburnt and lay seperated by stones.

I hate the thought of disturbing graves but, to date these magnificant places it is necessary, and, after all is said and done, the bodies are just the empty shells that once contained souls.
The souls of the people who left this superb legacy, now fly free with which ever God they choose to worship.

To investigate, date and look into the way of life at this time can, perhaps, be seen as a memorial to these people.
No lying flowers on their graves, instead we remember them by firstly finding out who and what they were.

We then protect their lands and monuments by making sure they will not be destroyed or built over.

Most of the monuments in Kilmartin are in the care of Historic Scotland.

graves

While excavating this area various things were found within the Cists.

Flint stones, food vessels, pottery, a greenstone axe and a flint knife.

Some of these items are preserved in Kilmartin House Museum, which is open to the public.

graves

The Cists shown on this page were never meant to be visible, they are visible now, only as a result of "stone robbing" .
