Welcome to Kilmartin Glen Page Four.
Temple Wood Stone Circles.
Well .....at last some updates for these poor neglected pages.
It's not that I haven't been anywhere to get the photos to add it's just that I got too busy to find time to add them.
Better late than never, here they are..
Some more of the spectacular standing stones in Kilmartin Glen.
First we eventually did get to Temple Wood, which in retrospect should really have been the first place we visited since the stone circles here are excellent examples of some of the earliest found in Britain.
Predating the Pyramids in Egypt these circles are thought to be dated to around 3500 BC.
As you approach this site the first circle you see is the smaller and older of the two.
In fact this smaller circle wasn't discovered until the larger was being excavated.
It had lain hidden by overgrowths of peat and moss.
It seems that this smaller one was in use and then for reasons not clear it was deserted and the larger circle was built.
The two circles lies nestled in Temple Wood, visible from a small track that serves farms in this area but not for public use.
The larger one is a very spectacluar circle, orginally consisting of 22 stones it now has 13 intact stones remaining.
At it's centre is a burial cist surrounded by an inner circle of kerb stones.
Some of the kerb stones are carved with a spiral design as are some of the larger "standing stones"
The Cist itself has been excavated and evidence of the burial of an adult found.
Other relics such as beakers and flints were also found in this cist.
