Very barbaric looking:-).
He is real and he is Scottish and he is also my little brother, William, more normally called Billy.
Hands off ladies, he already has a wife:-)
He has kindly agreed to show off this form of Kilt attire, well not agreed as such.....he doesn't know yet....
Once you have finished admiring his legs, move down, under the picture and we will find out what he is wearing....NO!!! not that bit!.
This is known as Full Dress Outfit and is what a lot of Scottish men will wear in preference to a Dinner Jacket or Tuxedo.
Billy was at our cousin's wedding and as all the males were kilted, so was he.
This outfit consists of the following.
Kilt in tartan of your Clan, if no clan you may wear the Royal Stuart tartan.
The jacket and waistcoat are known as a Prince Charles Coatee and Vest.
Dress Belt, Buckle and Kilt Pin.
Dress Sporran with Chain and Strap.
Kilt Hose with coloured flashes.
The shoes are known as Ghillie Brogues.
Dress Sgian Dubh, worn on the leg, tucked into the top of a hose.
(Sgian Dubh is kind of like a small dagger)
Dress shirt and Bow Tie.
The pint of beer is not obligatory and if you look through that list again you will see there is one item of clothing missing:-)
Now for the painful part, this little lot will cost to buy, around £800, $1,454 or €1,212, so once you have bought it, don't be drinking too much beer or it won't fit:-)
If you wish to wear a kilt as day wear you just wear the kilt with a sweater or tweed jacket, heavier shoes or boots, more or less treating it as you would a pair of trousers.
Females will usually wear only a sash or stole for formal occasions, sometimes a full length tartan skirt, or if you are a bride there are wedding dreses made not fully in tartan but with a lot of tartan trim.
Now we are finished studying that poor barbaric Scot
we will return to the History.
